My decision to become an Optometrist came about differently than how most people decide on a career. Instead of thinking, "I want to be a doctor, lawyer or engineer"... I sat down and worked backwards. I made a list of what I wanted from a career.
I had summer jobs. (such as the Jungle Cruise at Disney. So, I knew I liked working with people)
I had an interest in photography. (Optics)
I liked being my own boss. (No comment!)
Family was important to me. (I wanted to be around for them)
I like sports. (At the time nutrition, bite guards and Nautilus machines were the big rave...promising to increase athletic performance. Eyes however, were being overlooked)
I wanted to travel for fun but not for work.
So then I took a look at the careers that would give me all those things. It came down to a Surgeon, Veterinarian, Dentist or an Optometrist. In the end I became an Optometrist. One of the best decisions I have ever made! I have been happy ever since. Optometry has been a great career that offers a win-win situation for my patients and for myself. I get to make a positive difference in people's lives every day.
